Topic 1.1.1: Definition of Terms

  • Batch – The product produced by one execution of a recipe.
  • Configurable Procedure Recipes – Recipes where both the formula and the processing steps or the sequence of processing steps change.
  • Connection – A group of equipment (valves, pumps, flowmeters, etc.) that transfers material from a source unit to a destination unit.
  • Fixed Procedure Recipes – Recipes where only the formula parameters change.
  • Flexible Batch – The capability to quickly reconfigure a plant's processing equipment and control system based on a recipe for a finished product.
  • Formula – A combining of material quantities and process setpoints.
  • Handshake – A set of signals used to synchronize two programs.
  • Interlock – Provides safety and security for personnel and equipment by preventing the execution of unit procedure logic when other equipment or operators are not ready.
  • Phase – An action to be performed while a batch is running. Phases usually require one or more parameters (i.e., the temperature for a heating phase).
  • Procedure – The processing steps required to turn raw materials into a finished product.
  • Process Class – A group of units that have the same process capabilities. Processing capability is defined by Phases and Parameters.
  • Recipe – Combination of a Header, Equipment List, Formula, and a Procedure.
  • Redundancy – The redundancy system is to insure smooth and continuous batch system execution on a backup computer in the event of a hardware failure on the master system.
  • SCADA – Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition.
  • Segment – A subsection of a connection. Examples of segments include a piece of common piping, a shared valve, or a shared pump.
  • Train – A group of associated units. Trains can consist of one to many units, but typically contain those units that represent the natural processing lines found in the production facility.
  • Transfer Class – A group of connections where all source units are in the one process class and all destination units are in another process class.
  • Unit – A group of processing equipment that either processes materials or holds materials.
